In the days leading up to the IUPUI Top 100 Outstanding Students Recognition Dinner, we will be featuring the Kelley students who were named among IUPUI’s Top 100 students in 2018.
What has been your favorite experience so far at Kelley?
Sierra: During my junior year at Kelley, I had the opportunity to collaborate with a team to manage a Google AdWords Campaign for one of my favorite local businesses. Working closely with The Cake Bake Shop gave me insight into a successful business in Indianapolis and helped me better understand online marketing campaigns. I also completed a certification in the Google AdWords program that will be beneficial as a marketer.
What has been your favorite class and why?
One of my favorite classes was J402, Honors Administrative Policy (Corporate Strategy). This senior level course gave me the skillset to examine problems within a business and present solutions and strategies moving forward. My team and I examined two cases throughout the course, which helped me attain knowledge of multiple functions within a business and taught me how to think critically to solve problems.
If you had to pick one professor who has impacted you the most while at Kelley, who would it be?
I have taken two classes with Professor Westerhaus-Renfrow, and I thoroughly enjoyed both of them. Professor Westerhaus-Renfrow adds cases and activities to the schedule to help students learn beyond the textbook, such as negotiation exercises in her BUS-Z404 course. She is always willing to help her students and improve their understanding. Professor Westerhaus-Renfrow’s courses allowed me to work closely with my fellow students to apply course concepts and challenged our perspectives as emerging business professionals.
Where do you see yourself after you graduate?
After graduation, I hope to serve as a Leadership Consultant for one to two years for Phi Mu headquarters. Within this position, I would conduct leadership, recruitment, and operational check-ins with chapters and aid in establishing chapters on new campuses. Upon the completion of this position, I will resume working within marketing, with a focus on digital marketing and analytics.
Favorite activity/extracurricular activity that you have been involved in while at Kelley?
My time within Kelley Indianapolis Student Government and Phi Mu have been most beneficial to my growth as an individual and leader at IUPUI. Both organizations helped me connect with campus resources, faculty and staff, other organizations, service and philanthropy, and fellow students. My extracurricular involvement transformed my collegiate experience and helped me step outside of my comfort zone. Most importantly, being involved taught me how to work well with many types of people, how to lead effectively, and how to excel together toward a common purpose and vision.
What is your advice to current Kelley students?
I advise Kelley students to seek opportunities to strengthen their soft skills such as communication, leadership, conflict management, public speaking, and more through involvement and extracurricular. In addition, Kelley students should utilize their campus resources and network with faculty and staff and their fellow students. Lastly, I recommend Kelley students search for internships where they are able to apply their classroom knowledge to the business world.
What is your Kelley moment?
My Kelley moment was at the completion of my Honors I-Core presentation. Prior to I-Core, I struggled to see how the courses I was taking would fit into my future profession. I-Core helped me see the vital role of each function within a company and gave me a better understanding of each area of Team Dynamics, Operations, Marketing, and Finance. Within the team project, I learned to work closely with a team of diverse people and practice time management while balancing coursework, the project, and involvement. This course also challenged me to step outside of my comfort zone and ask for help from my teammates. My Kelley moment gave me the momentum to become a more analytical student and well-rounded business professional.
