A new Scholar in Residence at the Randall L. Tobias Center for Leadership Excellence will provide the latest leadership insights to students, faculty and the Tobias Leadership Center community.
Christopher O.L.H. Porter, IU Kelley School of Business OneAmerica endowed chair and professor of management, will serve as the inaugural Scholar in Residence, bridging the gap between scholarship and practice. He holds a number of appointments in the Kelley School of Business at IUPUI, including Business of Medicine Physician MBA faculty chair.
“We want to bring the newest and best leadership practices to our network and leaders responsible for developing successful people, organizations and communities,” said Julie Manning Magid, academic and executive director of the Tobias Leadership Center and professor of business law at the Kelley School. “Professor Porter’s research in the area of leadership will allow us to better understand new theories and ideas that help support the practice of leadership and how it has evolved in the 21st century to be more collaborative, innovative and faster-paced than ever before. As our Scholar in Residence, Porter helps us develop strategies for the challenges facing today’s leaders.”
Porter’s areas of expertise include leadership, organizational behavior, organizational entry and exit, team composition and dynamics and training and development. He received his PhD from Michigan State University and is associate editor for the Journal of Management and the Journal of Applied Psychology.
“I look forward to working with the Tobias Fellows and with Professor Magid in this new capacity,” said Porter. “As an associate editor of two leading journals, I am privy to the latest leadership research on a daily basis. I’ve seen lots of work over the last couple of years on abuse of supervision, shared leadership arrangements, leadership humility and speaking up at work. I bring these themes into my classroom teaching, and I intend on bringing this knowledge to the Tobias Leadership Center to ensure they’re disseminating cutting-edge leadership information.”
An Indiana University-wide center headquartered on the IUPUI campus, the Tobias Leadership Center works to engage diverse leaders to meet the challenges of impact, innovation and inclusion. The Scholar in Residence position complements the center’s Executive in Residence Program, which provides IU students and faculty access to seasoned leaders. Neal Rothermel works with the Tobias Leadership Center as the inaugural Executive in Residence.
“The Executive in Residence can explain to us how the ‘real world’ works when it comes to leadership practice, while the Scholar in Residence explains how leadership theories have evolved and where research can take us. Having both programs housed here at the Tobias Leadership Center will further develop the center as a world-class leadership hub,” said Magid.
