Tiras promoted to associate professor

Congratulations to Sam Tiras on his promotion to associate professor of accounting at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business on the IUPUI campus.

Tiras has taught at the Kelley School since January 2015. He currently teaches accounting and financial statement analysis to students in the top-ranked Evening MBA and Master of Science in Accounting programs.

Tiras’ research focuses on financial accounting, implications of auditing on financial reporting and corporate governance. He travels across the globe to conduct research, most recently on auditing and financial reporting, as well as International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS). His research has taken him to Brazil, Germany, Spain and South Africa in recent years.

Tiras’ forthcoming work includes two papers: “The Effects of Auditor Tenure on Fraud and Its Detection,” in press at The Accounting Review in January 2019, and “The Interrelation between Auditing and Managerial Reporting Choices and its Effects on Financial Reporting Quality,” in press at Contemporary Accounting Research. Prior to these two studies, Tiras’ has also published his research in Review of Accounting Studies, The Accounting Review, Contemporary Accounting Research, Journal of Accounting and Public Policy and Journal of Business Finance and Accounting.

“Financial reporting does not occur in a vacuum,” explained Tiras. “For financial statement users, regulators or Kelley students to understand the information being reported, it is imperative to understand those factors that influence managers’ incentives for informative disclosures. We should also understand the oversight and environment which may moderate the ‘informativeness’ of these disclosures. These issues guide my research and the context in which I teach accounting at the Kelley School of Business.”

“Professor Tiras is excellent in the classroom, having received the MBA Teaching Excellence Award multiple times from our Student Advisory Board. He brings excellent and cutting edge research to our faculty. His research informs companies and regulators about the best reporting methods, evaluates the quality of financial statement information and the value of internal monitoring by the board and the CEO,” said Executive Associate Dean Ken Carow.

Tiras received his PhD in accounting from The Ohio State University in 1994. Prior to coming to the Kelley School of Business, he was on the faculty at Louisiana State University, University at Buffalo, University of Oregon and Florida International University.

Tiras received the Kelley School Evening MBA Teaching Excellence Award in both 2017 and 2018, an honor voted on by the Evening MBA student board. He also received the International Research Development Fund Grant in 2017 to further his international research.
